- Abstract
The present contribution discusses the autoecology and the place of species of the Ruta genus in vegetation of two different sites in northwestern Algeria using vegetation sampling with seasonal observations. The first site is located on the coastline (Beni Saf) and the second one is more inland (Tessala). One 4 × 400m transect was set up at each study site and exposure, soil type, moisture and temperature were recorded. Vegetation sampling was carried within the transects in 14 1m² quadrats in Beni Saf and 30 1m² quadrats in Tessala. Results show that the ecological factors and plant community are key factors for ecology and biology of the three studied Ruta species. The plant composition of the two study sites is different, resulting from bioclimatic and ecological features. This is confirmed by the Sørensen similarity coefficient (Cs) which shows a low similarity (< 50%) between these study sites. Ruta montana (L.) L. prefers scree soils and grows into the margins of thickets; unlike, Ruta chalepensis L. and Ruta angustifolia Pers. which prefer to establish within dense vegetation, thus benefiting from the humidity and litter provided by other plants. The comparison of biological spectra shows that hemicryptophytes dominate the vegetal cover with percentages between 31.5% and 37.1%. Therophytes are common in the Tessala study site (36.8%). Anthropozoogenic action and unfavorable weather conditions, compromise the sustainability, ecology and biology of Ruta species.
