- Abstract
Periodontal pathology exhibits a great variety of clinical forms and manifestations, despite the fact that they are caused by the same etiologic factor - the subgingival bacterial plaque. These variations originate from the interference of the bacterial challenge to the periodontal tissues with the host immune response of the patient. These two elements express a complex association, which is often impacted by a series of local/oral risk factors, exerting a predisposing influence on the onset and evolution patterns of the periodontal diseases. The oral risk factors can change the characteristics of the local inflammatory periodontal reaction, and also increase the retention and accumulation of bacterial plaque, hence creating favorable conditions for the development of periodontal diseases.
