- Title
Financial Analysis of the Local Union.
- Authors
Allison, Elizabeth K.
- Abstract
In particular, the paper focuses on two financial questions where the answers to be obtained are both interesting in themselves and possibly relevant to some larger questions. The first relates to the financial stability of the local union, e.g., the soundness of its financial structure, as measured by its liquidity, solvency, the amount of debt it carries, and its level of reserves. The second is the question of union spending patterns: how unions allocate their limited resources. In addition to their intrinsic interest, the numbers given in answer to these questions can advance some time-honored arguments. If, for example, lawyers have indeed taken over the labor movement, as some suggest, the data as to "professional fees" should show it. Moreover, by comparing spending patterns among essentially similar locals, one can get some sense for the efficiency of local union allocation decisions.
