- Abstract
Although the rights of Franco-Ontarians are guaranteed by Ontario's 1986 French Language Services Act, this group's ability to access health and social services in their own language can prove challenging since major barriers exist to receiving such a continuum of services. We used qualitative interviews to explore the perspectives of 40 Francophone parents and caregivers living in a bilingual setting in the Ottawa region whose child or the senior they care for uses health and social services in French. These Francophones played an active role in obtaining French-language services and employed five strategies to do so. The sense of comfort and the relationship of trust fostered by the use of French throughout the interventions, as well as the support of Francophone professionals, facilitated the process. Nevertheless, the responsibility for obtaining French-language services must not fall to individuals or to a minority.
