- Abstract
Sustainable development has recently received great attention from both scientists and policymakers. Environmental quality is one of the most important fundamental components of sustainable development. Environmental quality means that human needs are met in a healthy manner by the ecosystem. This study aims to determine the factors that lead to the deterioration of environmental quality in Turkey and to draw attention to the environmental pollution situation in Turkey. In the study, the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) method was used by using the 1998-2019 period data. The analysis results obtained in the study showed that foreign direct investment, economic growth, number of motor vehicles, financial development, primary energy consumption, environmental tax, and high-tech exports variables are the determinants of CO2 emissions in Turkey.
