- Abstract
The article discusses the history of the East India Company's practice of lending books to British soldiers in the field. It describes the reading practices of soldiers in British imperial colonies such as the Caribbean Islands, Canada, and South Africa, the rise and popularity of prose fiction, and the relation between English literature and the British national identity. Books such as "Robinson Crusoe" and "Mansfield Park" are discussed, along with the naturalization and promotion of the British imperial interests through its fiction.
