- Abstract
A renewed interest in the history of word-formation has arisen in recent years. The present paper reflects this interest and proposes a description of the theories and techniques employed by Greek and Latin grammarians to describe complex -- especially derived -- words. Its aim is twofold. At a relatively specific level, it aims to reconstruct the theoretical bases for the study of word-formation in antiquity, namely the theory of the , as well as to distinguish two strongly different taxonomies in the study of the accidentia nominum, namely the divisio graeca and the divisio latina, and to illustrate how and why the empirical procedures of analysis employed by Greek and Roman grammarians in the study of word-formation differ from the contemporary standard. On a more general level, it aims to reconsider the relation between word-formation and the problem of time in Late Antiquity, especially in Priscian, and the way in which that relation was perceived in the Middle Ages and is perceived in the modern era.
