LEGAL EDUCATION AND TRIGGER WARNINGS: MORE HARM THAN GOOD?
- Authors
Simon, Diana J.
- Abstract
This article explores the debate surrounding trigger warnings in educational settings, specifically in college and law school classrooms. It presents arguments both in favor of and against trigger warnings, acknowledging the diverse perspectives on the topic. Scientific studies are discussed, suggesting that trigger warnings may not necessarily reduce student anxiety and could even increase anxiety for trauma survivors and students with PTSD. The article concludes by proposing a compromise, suggesting that a subtle warning at the beginning of the semester without using the word "trigger" may be beneficial, and emphasizes the importance of creating a welcoming and trusting class atmosphere to support students.
