- Title
The Body in Pain in Early Modern England.
- Authors
Truman, James C. W.
- Abstract
A literary criticism of "Paradise Lost," an epic poem in blank verse by the 17th-century English poet John Milton, is presented. It examines Book IV of the poem in which Satan and Gabriel engage in a battle of wits over the nature of pain in early Modern England. It discusses the historical narrative made familiar by French philosopher Michel Foucault, which equated pain with punishment that dominated the juridical mechanisms of the early modern period.
