- Abstract
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1973 was awarded to the organometallic chemists Ernst Otto Fischer and Geoffrey Wilkinson. They expanded the structure and concepts of chemistry and changed the field of chemistry. Fischer isolated the first carbene-metal complex, and Wilkinson discovered an effective catalyst for the hydrogenation and hydroformylation of olefins. Fischer became a professor at the Technical University of Munich and advocated for academic freedom. Wilkinson became a professor at Harvard University and later at Imperial College London. Fischer passed away in 2007. The author of the article, Helmut Werner, was a student of Fischer and is himself a renowned chemist.
