- Abstract
This article deals with issues related to office ergonomics. Cumulative trauma disorders (CTD), also called repetitive strain injuries or repeated trauma illnesses are becoming an increasing problem in the workplace. The said disorders are caused by motion patterns and postures at work that damage tendons and other tissues faster than the body can repair them. Ergonomics or "work science" fits the job to the person. Unless the work station and equipment fit the size and capability of the individual using it, they are not ergonomic, increasing the danger of repetitive strain and possible CTD. Moreover, training for managers and human resource staff should be part of any action plan to address office ergonomics. This training should include overcoming the notion that a company is better off if claims are not reported. Prevention of cases before they occur is also critical to the plan. If employees do not report CTD at the earliest stage possible, symptoms will most likely become more severe, delaying treatment and increasing cost.
