- Authors
Fabian, Nelson E.
- Abstract
The article presents the author's views on media coverage of public health issues. He discusses the media tendency to cover what the public and consumers are interested in, and the reinforcing influence this has on public opinion and policy priorities, and how this is not always in accord with public health interests. He takes as a representative example the risk of a global influenza pandemic, as from avian flu, a topic in which the public (and consequently the news media) has lost interest, even though it remains a serious public health threat.
