- Abstract
This paper discusses the learning styles and strategies used by the French students in the Malay language learning. The study was conducted at the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilisations (INALCO), Paris. Subjects of the study consist of 19 students of the Indonesian/Malaysian Language Bachelor Degree Programme, Department of South-East Asia and Asia Pacific (Centre du Asie du Sud-est et Pacifique), INALCO. The study aims at understanding and describing what are the learning styles and strategies used by the students in their language learning. Data were collected through a questionnaire adopted from Wang (2015) and were analyzed using simple statistic which looks at the frequency and percentage of the styles and strategies used by the students. Analysis of learning styles applied by the student in their Malay language learning was done according to the 4 language skills which are reading, writing, listening and speaking based on Christison's (2003) theoretical framework. Analysis for the learning strategies were done based on the Oxford's (1990) theoretical framework which divides strategies into 6 main categories; memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective and social strategies. Questions related to strategies used by the students cover all these categories. Findings show that most of the French students prefer employing visual, global, field-dependent and reflective learning styles and tend to use memory, metacognitive, affective and social strategies in their language learning.
