- Abstract
Requests for the placement of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) have grown substantially in recent years in interventional radiology departments. With the increased use, healthcare providers caring for PICCs are aware of the associated complications, including thrombosis and infection. Despite the existence of evidence-based practice guidelines, complications continue to occur. The purpose of this manuscript is to examine the impact of PICC-related complications, review the current literature for evidence-based guidelines, identify barriers to their use, implications, and identify two innovative solutions. The identified solutions demonstrate promising potential to assist healthcare providers in the utilization of guidelines, which will reduce the incidence and severity of complications.
