- Abstract
The article discusses the common socio-economic characteristics that link childbearing at an advanced maternal age in ancient and modern times. It highlights that in antiquity, although the lifespan was generally short, women of upper classes gave birth at or above 35 years of age. These women received good nutrition and did not engage in hard work, which is known to affect reproductive function. In modern times, artificial reproductive technologies (ART) have been used to address procreation problems for older women, but these services are not accessible to many couples in low- and middle-income countries. The article suggests that international organizations could play a useful role in addressing these inequalities.
