ABSTRACTS: THEORETICAL SOCIAL MOBILITY MODELS AND CONGRUENCE AND COMPARATIVE FINDINGS: AN ANALYSIS OF RAYMOND BOUDON'S WORD.
- Abstract
The article presents abstract of an article by Steven I. Miller and Rosemarie B. Bogal that appeared in the August 1979 issue of the journal Quality and Quantity. This article is an attempt to clarify some of sociologist Raymond Boudon's ideas as to the relationship of social mobility to both inequality of educational opportunity (IEO) and inequality of social opportunity (ISO). In the analysis, mobility rates are computed for son's social status controlling various combinations of father's social and educational levels and son's educational levels. These mobility estimates are then compared. One major conclusion is that the mobility estimates drawn from the theoretical mobility model are related to actual empirical findings on mobility rates and patterns, in Western societies. Estimates are also given, using the data from Boudon's model, as to the strength and directionality of these factors. It is concluded that Boudon's social mobility model is a useful heuristic device in understanding the role of social background and education in providing for or restricting both IEO and ISO.
