- Abstract
After successfully exploring the Seno Mexicano (the coastal area of modern-day southern Texas and northern Mexico), Colonel Don Jose de Escandon was appointed to colonize the region in 1747. Father Simon del Hierro, a Franciscan missionary from the College of Nuestra Seiiora de Guadalupe in Zacatecas, accompanied Escandon during the colonization expedition from January to April 1749, and kept a detailed diary of events. Hierro narrates the party's journey and documents its activities. Hierro also includes criticisms of Escandon and his colonization plan. Specifically, he was displeased with Escandon's failure to found missions near the settlement sites during the initial colonization phase, as Escandon had proposed. Although Hierro s diary is an important manuscript that serves as a primary source documenting the preliminary colonization of Nuevo Santander that occurred under Jose de Escandon, many scholars have failed to incorporate it into their analysis of the history of Nuevo Santander. This article presents the first English-language translation of Hierro s diary.
