The article discusses the 17th and 18th century development of musical thought and genres such as the melodrama, with reference to elements of musical language and the relationship between music, lyrics, and poetics, as well as in connection with the literary genre of romanticism. Topics discussed include the context of 17th century French musical philosophy, within the aesthetic thought of this period; the musical philosophy of 18th century French abbot Jean Baptiste Dubos, and the work of 18th century French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
