- Title
REPRESENTATIONS AND REALITIES: CEMETERIES A EVIDENCE FOR WOMEN IN ROMAN BRITAIN.
- Authors
PEARCE, JOHN
- Abstract
The article discusses a possible use of evidence from burial sites to consider the question of gender identity, gender differences, and cultural identity related to gender in ancient Rome in the provinces. Specifically the author uses as example evidence from Roman Britain but the author contends that additional research on the issue is needed. Previous scholarship is surveyed with emphasis on outstanding questions related to gender roles. Changes in gender roles associated with marked cultural changes in the Roman provinces such as Romanization and changes in religious practice over time are highlighted.
