- Authors
Traver, Barbara
- Abstract
The article discusses an 18th-century proposal by French nobleman Ferdinand-Alexandre, baron de Bessner, to settle maroons, or African refugees, from Suriname in French Guiana. According to the author, Bessner's proposal was based on the principal that perceived differences in blacks' personal characteristics were the products of enslavement rather than innate racial qualities. Details on the racial attitudes of Enlightenment thinkers are also presented.
