- Abstract
This article focuses on major histocompatibility complex. It was initially described by means of its relationship to the genetic control of the strong transplantation antigens. This perspective alone focused the attention of many investigators on this area. Interest increased, concomitantly with a quest for new major histocompatibility complex gene markers, with the realization that, in addition to the classical serologically defined antigens of H-2K and H-2D in mouse and HLA-A, -B, and -C in man, there were loci controlling other antigens, called LD, that played a role in the overall allograft reaction.
