- Title
MAKING A RELIGION OF INTERGROUP EDUCATION: THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF CHRISTIANS AND JEWS, 1927-1957.
- Authors
Wechsler, Harold S.
- Abstract
Preaching the "Brotherhood of Man under the Fatherhood of God," the National Conference of Christians and Jews became the largest, most influential promoter of mutual tolerance and acceptance among Protestants, Catholics, and Jews during the 1930's and 1940's. This essay analyzes the faith of Everett R. Clinchy, who led the Conference for three decades in the education of youth as the best way to decrease religious discrimination and prejudice and to increase religious tolerance. It then asks why the Conference's motivating force -- a reliance upon education, not political, legislative, or legal action -- expended itself by the mid-1950's.
