- Abstract
Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is an interdisciplinary approach that uses animals to help kids feel less anxious. The term "dentophobia," or the dread of dentists, is not new, and kids are particularly vulnerable to it. Many strategies have been put forth to reduce anxiety during dental treatment. These strategies primarily center on nonpharmacological management and pharmacological management. Patients' anxiety has been found to decrease with AAT. The levels of endorphins are higher and catecholamines are lower in children after AAT. A 20-minute interaction with a pet animal is known to lessen anxiety and enhance mood and general well-being. The efficacy of AAT in pediatric dentistry is demonstrated by this poster.
