- Abstract
Bugs plague NYC - but don't mistake them for gnats; pesky aphid swarms pose no health risk. New York entomologists quickly rose to the challenge, though, and within a day or two from the first sightings, they identified the green hordes as possibly two different species of aphids in their winged (alate) state, one of which may have been a sycamore aphid ( I Drepanosiphum platanoidis i Schrank). "PESKY" WAS REALLY AN EXCELLENT CHOICE OF WORDS FOR THIS PARTICULAR VISITATION BY INSECTS, AND NOT JUST BECAUSE IT'S A DIFFICULT WORD TO CONTORT INTO A PUN.
