Deadwood's Pioneer Merchant.
- Authors
WONG, EDITH C.; FRENCH, EILEEN; FOSHA, ROSE ESTEP
- Abstract
The article discusses the Chinese American settler Wong Fee Lee, who arrived in Deadwood, South Dakota in 1876. After his arrival in the town, he grew to prominence as merchant in the Chinese American community. Two of his commercial buildings known as the Wing Tsue became historic landmarks. The article considers local discriminatory laws barring Chinese and Chinese Americans from owning property in the U.S. in the 19th and 20th centuries. The author also speculates whether historic accounts of the physician Dr. Wing Tsue refer to Wong Fee Lee.
