- Abstract
Development Studies are well established in Norwegian universities and major institutes, particularly within the social sciences. Research on development, developing countries and regions is often fragmented, as are North-South relations within the disciplinary departments of the universities; however, at most universities, separate, multidisciplinary centres of development (and the environment) have been established. Development research is also well established within a few relatively large multidisciplinary institutes outside the university system, but even this sector contains small and fragmented development research milieux. Funding opportunities have played an important part in both the growth and the direction of Norwegian development research. This article describes and discusses the emergence of development research in Norway up to the present. A key question is how the framework conditions - principally the financial arrangements - have influenced Norwegian research within this field of study: norms, approaches and the thematic orientation.
