- Abstract
The article presents a case study of a teacher's journey in learning and developing appropriate uses of technology for her advanced placement high school international relations class. Mary, a secondary social studies teacher, has taught more than twenty-five years in a Midwest classroom and is highly regarded by both her administration and peers as an effective and exceptional instructor. Succumbing to mounting internal and external pressures to improve not only her own knowledge but also her connection to her tech-savvy students, she undertook a project . The basic goals of the project were measurable and attainable, to acquire more basic technical computer skills; and to create a presentation for a social studies lesson on globalization using a new software program. Transforming their teaching practice to include technology and interactivity in lesson plans can be a daunting experience for most teachers. Mary is certainly not alone in her confusion and anger. Instructional changes that occur as a result of integrating technology with instruction create challenging problems for teachers because the role of the teacher changes from one of traditional lecturer to facilitator.
