- Abstract
Objective This interview with Hans Butzer and Torrey Butzer, designers of the Oklahoma City National Memorial, documents their experience learning about the bombing while living in Germany, as well as specific challenges they encountered during the design and construction process. Method The Butzers describe their memories of the event and traveling to Oklahoma City for the jury after being named finalists, where the project became 'a very personal matter where our work would potentially impact how others would understand life, death and fate.' After learning they won the design competition, the Butzers worked with the community to finalize their design for the site, and recall memorable exchanges with community members during this process. Results The Butzers recount how they feel the community has responded to their lasting presence in the city ever since the completion of the memorial. Conclusion The Butzers' participatory design of the Oklahoma City National Memorial continues to offer 'comfort, strength, peace, hope, and serenity' and to serve as a symbol of resilience in its community.
