- Abstract
The article focuses on the development of the rayon industry in the U.S. There has been description of the growth of the industry in Europe. The successful commercial manufacture of rayon in the U.S. did not start until 1911. American Viscose remained the sole producer of rayon in the U.S. for a decade or so. It earned over 100 million during the first decade of its existence. The alluring prospects of the business along with the inability of the company to meet the increasing demands attracted great attention to the industry leading to setting up of scores of corporations to manufacture artificial silk. The widening stream of technical improvements removed the inferiority of rayon as against silk. Rayon had a distinct advantage with regard to price. Its uses became wider with improvement in its quality, increase in knowledge of handling the new material and decrease in its price. It is viewed that increase in the tensile strength of rayon beyond that of silk will make the American mills as efficient in the production of rayon goods as they are in the manufacture of cotton goods.
