- Title
The Blood of the Colony: Wine and the Rise and Fall of French Algeria.
- Authors
Williams, Atticus
- Abstract
Wine production took quite a long time to take off in the colony, but with the rise of phylloxera in French vineyards, demand for Algerian wine increased within the metropole. In his chapter analyzing wine production in post-independence Algeria, White notes that "wine made many Algerians feel their independence was not yet complete" (211). If one is to track French colonization in Algeria, one can see the initial colonial efforts as being an attempt to change the production of Algeria to suit what is called "complementary colonization.".
