The article presents an essay on the depiction of Jewishness in the novel "The Golden Bowl" by Henry James. It explores the treatment of Jewishness in the novel as a quality that can be acquired and performed by non-Jewish characters seeking the progress and prosperity of Jewish immigrants in the 20th century, the concept of appropriating ethnicity through performances and how the actions of the character Fanny Assingham reflect the vision of James of Anglo-America.
