- Abstract
Biological weapons are considered weapons of mass destruction that use as a payload different microorganisms or toxins that can induce serious diseases, lethal in many cases, that can reach an organism by inhalation, skin, or through the digestive tract. Biological agent attacks are insidious and fear-inducing, and can go undetected for long periods of time, potentially exposing large numbers of individuals who are unaware of the danger. Accurate and factual information provided to the general public by credible medical experts is very important to allay their fears and encourage them to cooperate and participate in achieving a constructive and organized community response. Veterinarians play a significant role in the emergency response to a major bioterrorist attack, given that the microbiological agents of choice in these situations are zoonotic. Some researchers warn of the potential power that genetic engineering would represent for future bioterrorists. At the same time, the use of agents that do not harm people but seriously disrupt the economy (for example the foot-and-mouth virus or the Newcastle disease virus, which can cause massive economic damage but without pathological significance in humans) is also being discussed.
