- Title
The Library and the Wilderness: Susan Howe's Pragmatism.
- Authors
Clark, Miriam Marty
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the books of Susan Howe entitled "My Emily Dickinson" and "The Birth-mark" is presented. It examines how they invite a strong critical emphasis on resistance and radical disruption consistent with accepted characterization of the politics of avant-garde writing. It highlights Howe's vigorous indictments of patriarchal American culture and forceful refusal of its repressions and erasures. It surfaces a pragmatist lineage for Dickinson, and implicitly for herself.
