- Title
THE 2006 MEXICAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION: DEMOCRATIC DEVELOPMENT OR DEMOCRATIC DEBACLE?
- Authors
Sabia, Debra; Kohler, Vincent
- Abstract
The article examines the process of democratic consolidation in Mexico in the aftermath of the presidential election in 2006, in which the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) has declared Felipe Calderón of the National Action Party (PAN) the winner over Andres Manuel López Obrador of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). The author contends that an analysis of political conditions leading up to the 2006 presidential election suggests that democratic institutions in the country remain undeveloped and vulnerable to manipulation. He adds that governmental neutrality has appeared to be missing among PAN party leaders.
