- Title
INDONESIA FINDS A NEW VOICE.
- Authors
Sukma, Rizal
- Abstract
The article discusses Indonesia's path to democracy after the fall of authoritarian leader Suharto, and questions whether the country's advocacy for democratic government is genuine promotion of democracy, or a method of creating a new national identity after decades of an authoritarian regime. Domestic politics and their effect on democracy's place in Indonesia's foreign policy are examined, including the idea that the country must convince neighboring nations of its legitimacy as a democracy before it can successfully promote democratic government. The article concludes that Indonesia must strengthen its democracy at home before promoting it abroad.
