- Abstract
In the second book of his Chronicles, Jean Froissart gives a troubled account of the assassination of Roger d'Auterive (1379). The event, of which there is little record, was picked up on by three manuscript illuminators at the beginning of the fifteenth century in Paris, when it became relevant to events marked by the civil war and the troubles of 1413 and 1418. They depict the scene outside Ghent, criticize the bailiff and, following the line taken by the guild members of the rebelling Chaperons blancs, draw attention to the responsibility of the ringleaders and their accomplices both before and during the slaughter.
