- Abstract
This paper presents the results of a research study aimed at observing the emergence of stereotypes in the representation of the textual content of a narrative text -- in this case, Mi planta de naranja lima-- through visual reformulations (visual representations including the combination of words, phrases, and/or sentences with drawings, graphs charts, tables, grids, and the like). Results suggest that the visual reformulations were not enough to capture the cultural content of the text used in the study and offered a superficial approach, plagued with stereotypes. In general, the approach to otherness was limited to the perception of what was exotic or exciting about a culture or subculture, without a genuine effort to become familiar with what was strange. The study revealed the learners' difficulty to distance themselves from their cultural bias in their interpretations, which points to the need to address stereotypes in the classroom.
