- Abstract
"The Persian Version," written and directed by Maryam Keshavarz, is a dramedy that challenges Iranian immigrant stereotypes while exploring the complexities of mother-daughter relationships. The film follows Leila, a struggling queer writer who becomes accidentally pregnant, and her mother Shireen, a conservative Iranian-born mother of nine with a family secret. Through a non-linear narrative structure, the film interweaves present-day events with flashbacks and childhood memories, highlighting the similarities and differences between the two women. While the film tackles various themes and incorporates different elements, it may leave viewers feeling somewhat unfulfilled due to its fragmented approach.
