- Abstract
Objective: To comprehensively evaluate the detection rate of depressive symptoms among middle school students in China. Methods: We searched the Chinese and English databases to collect the studies published from 2012 and 2018 about the epidemiology of depressive symptoms among Chinese middle school students. Random-effects meta-analysis was adopted to combine the detection rate of depression symptoms according to the test of heterogeneity, followed by subgroup analyses by region, school type, gender, grade, place of residence and screening scale. Results: A total of 37 studies with 88 598 participants and 23 589 students with depressive symptoms met the eligibility criteria. The pooled detection rate of depression symptoms among middle school students was 28.4% (95% Cl: 24.4% - 32.4%). Subgroup analyses showed that detection rate of depression symptoms in the western China was higher than that in the central and eastern China(23. 8%,22. 9% vs. 22. 7%). The rate in ordinary middle school students was higher than that in key middle school students (36. 9% vs. 21. 9%). The rate in female was higher than that in male (27. 1% vs. 25. 5%). The rate in senior school students was higher than that in junior school students (28. 4% vs. 26. 8%). The rate in rural students was higher than that in city students (33. 3% vs. 27. 5%). The result from SDS Depression scale (46. 1%) was higher than that of other scales. Conclusion: The detection rate of depression symptoms among middle school students in China may be high- er. There may be differences in the detection rate of depressive symptoms among different regions, school types, gender, grades, places of residence, and screening scales.
