- Abstract
The article profiles American Jewish soldier Harry Spanier in the 19th century. Spanier was the son of Abraham Spanier of Wandsbek and was part of the German-Jewish migration to the U.S. in the middle of the century. He married Frances Emma Vagnier in 1884 who demanded that their children be brought up Catholic. Representing New Yorkers in the shipping of mules in South Africa is cited as the first successful business venture of Spanier in the country. He died on a battlefield in Surprise Hill on December 11, 1899 due to a mortal shot in the stomach.
