- Title
NAVIGATING "THOSE TERRIBLE MESHES OF THE LAW": LEGAL REALISM IN ANTHONY TROLLOPE'S ORLEY FARM AND THE EUSTACE DIAMONDS.
- Authors
PIONKE, ALBERT D.
- Abstract
Literary criticism on legal realism in the books "Orley Farm" and "Eustace Diamonds," both written by English novelist Anthony Trollope is presented. The author explains that Trollope's presentation of the law in "Orley Farm" was unsuccessful and contained several mistakes, so for "Eustace Diamonds" he was helped by legal advisers. The author presents an interdisciplinary explanation for Trollope's approach to the representation of law. The article references the theories of early-20th-century sociologist Max Weber, law and literature studies, and Victorian novel criticism.
