Maurice Denis and the Sense of Music.
- Authors
Vaughan, Gerard
- Abstract
The article discusses the importance of the sense of music and musicality in the art of Marice Denis. A theorist, critic, painter and secondary member of Nabis, his imagery was considered easy to respond to by symbolist critics and writers. According to the author, three aspects like the way in which sense of music informed Denis' theoretical writings and added to his concept of expressive and symbolic capabilities of form and colour, the extent of his acquisition of a musical imagery, and his relationship with members of the Parisian musical milieu. These things contributed to the development of his art. In addition, Denis promoted an analogy between music and colour, which were evident in his paintings.
