- Title
INDETERMINACY AND MEANING: A PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH TO OROONOKO.
- Authors
Johnson, Christopher D.
- Abstract
The author discusses his approach to teaching the English Restoration period book "Oroonoko," by Aphra Behn, edited by Catherine Gallagher, as part of an upper level literature studies class for college students. Literary theories forwarded by scholars including Laura Mandell, Janet Todd, and David Hoegberg are considered. Some of the topics explored include discussions of the differences between monologic works versus dialogic works, early modern women authors and sentimentalism, and how "Oroonoko" reflects genres including heroic narratives, travel writing, and biographies.
