- Abstract
Factors influencing the charring behaviour of timber This article focuses on the investigation of internal and external factors that influence the charring of timber and the temperature profiles within timber cross sections when exposed to fire. Based on own and existing fire test results, the influence of temperature time scenarios, relevant for non‐standard fire design as well as the influence of the initial wood moisture content on the charring behaviour were investigated. The outcomes of this work, based on the experiments and followed by analytical and numerical investigations, are simplified design approaches that can be used to determine the charring depth and in‐depth temperature distribution when designing timber structures for standard and non‐standard fire exposure.
