- Abstract
Retrofitting method for stiffening masonry walls in earthquake regions To improve the load carrying behavior of stiffening masonry walls under earthquake action a new retrofitting method was developed at TU Dortmund University. Thin textile reinforced concrete elements fastened at the masonry wall with anchors lead to a wall system which not only fulfills the requirements for integrity and resistance but is also capable to develop a ductile limit state mechanism. Following the presentation of the concept and construction principles, the capacity and operation of the retrofitting system are presented with reference to experimental and analytical investigations. In this connection, earthquake simulation tests on full scale walls are especially instructive with the direct comparison of unretrofitted and retrofitted masonry walls. Next to the detailed description of its behavior and prerequisites, the effectiveness of the retrofitting system for a building with stiffening masonry walls is identified by means of comparative seismic analysis.
