- Abstract
The article considers the origins of portraiture. Topics discussed include examination on the portrait of Anne Jagiellon, queen regnant of Poland and grand duchess of Lithuania, information on the book "The Civilisation of the Renaissance in Italy" by Jacob Burckhardt, and theory regarding the invention of portraiture. It also presents the view of Alfred Lehmann on the awareness during the Middle Ages of the term individuality, and description on the portrait of Archduke of Austria Rudolph IV.
