- Abstract
Ralph Bollmann has written a biography about Angela Merkel, which describes the political career of the former German Chancellor in nearly 800 pages. Despite initially being an outsider and lacking typical qualities for a top position, Merkel managed to successfully rise in politics. Bollmann shows how Merkel transformed her deficits into strengths and advanced her political career through patience, silence, resilience, and pragmatic politics. The biography is based on the author's personal observations, as he accompanied Merkel as a journalist. It is emphasized that Merkel acted as a government leader with a sense of reality and caution, but also that criticism points such as neglecting infrastructure and the energy dependence on Russia are not sufficiently addressed. In the end, Merkel is compared to Bismarck and referred to as a liberal reformer.
