- Abstract
The habilitation thesis by Katharina Ulrike Mersch, titled "Disregard, Recognition, and Creativity. Excommunicated Laypeople in the 13th Century," examines the possibilities for laypeople to defend themselves against ecclesiastical censures such as excommunication and even to use them to their advantage. The author considers the reactions of laypeople to excommunication, the continued religiosity under the church ban, and the relationships between excommunicated laypeople and clerics. The examples come from the 13th century in the German Empire and include, among others, the dukes Otto II of Bavaria and Albrecht I of Brunswick, as well as the cities of Worms and Cologne. The study shows that excommunication did not leave the affected laypeople indifferent and that they found creative ways to deal with legal norms and remain capable of action.
