- Abstract
Adverse events (AE) in health care are incidents that result in preventable harm to the patient. COVID-19 changed routines in hospitals, which may be reflected in AE rates. Using data from health surveillance (Notivisa), the monthly occurrence of AE before and during the pandemic was compared in health institutions in the state of Bahia, Brazil. AEs occurred significantly more (P=0.03) during COVID-19 compared to the monthly average of previous years. Three facts seem to have contributed to the increase in AE: the burden of attending to COVID-19; poor management of health services; and conflicting information on protocols for preventive and therapeutic procedures. It is suggested that there was an increase in the economic cost, suffering of patients and health teams during the pandemic due to the higher frequency of AE.
