- Abstract
Issues related to the valorization of black esthetics are already part of history, such as the Black Power movement (USA) and currently, in Brazil, the Afroculture movement, founded in 2015 in São Luis do Maranhão. The present study examined the perception of women with characteristics of the black ethnic group, the effect of this esthetic on women's identity and social relations, and the political impact in movements of valorization of the black hair esthetic have on the fight against prejudice. 74 women were interviewed, in which 16 declared themselves to be linked to some political movement of valorization of the black esthetics. The analysis of the data was, in a complementary way, on the techniques of Content Analysis and Discourse. For women, hair appears as a strong symbol of valorization of black identity, but at the same time it generates a confrontation of dilemmas when they choose to assume that identity, directly impacting their self-esteem, social relations and identity.
